Materials
- acrylic yarn (4 mm) in white or other color you like
- acrylic or sport yarn (5 ply) in pink or other color you like
- 4.5 and 3 mm hook
- scissors
- sewing needle
- glue (optional)
***Note: you can use any yarn or hook size you want, the only difference will be the size of your work.
Abbreviations
- Slip knot
- Chain - ch
- Single crochet - sc
- Double crochet - dc
- Slip stitch - slpst
Base of the cover
*** Note: For the cover I used a 4 mm yarn and hook, but you can use any hook size and yarn you want.
Start with slip knot
Now you have to make chains, they have to be as long as the height (or length) of your book, and even a little longer so it’s comfy to fit the book.
Row 1: skip this 1st ch and from the 2nd ch make 1 sc in each ch
(when you finish, again compare your work and your book to make sure it reaches the height)
Row 2 to “…”: 1 ch, turn your work, and make 1 sc in each stitch
(repeat this same pattern for all the next rows until you reach a size that can cover all the sides of your book)
After you reach the size of your book, then you have to add 4 or more extra rows to each side of the base (in other words, make 8 or more extra rows) so then you can fold them and insert your book in.
Like this
When you are done, fasten off (ch 1, pull your yarn, and cut it)
Now we will sew the sides (the folded extra rows)
- Fold the extra rows you made and start sewing the parts pointed in the picture passing through the top stitches of both sides. (watch the sewing part of the tutorial for reference)
Finally hide all the left yarns through the work (weave, cut them or use any other method you like)
Border 1
***Note: I’ll do this border white but you can do it in any other color you like
We will sc through all the border of the cover
So start with a slip knot, then leave it apart for a moment
Grab you work and flip it so the face side should be facing you
Then insert your hook in any stitch of the border of the work
Grab the slip knot and slide it in
1 ch and in the same stitch make 1 sc
Now continue by making 1 sc in each stitch of the border until you reach the end
- when you reach a part where you sew before, just pass through a little harder and make the sc
- for sides of the cover you also have to sc through all the stitches of the row of the side
when you finish , slst in the 1st sc you did
Fasten off (ch 1, pull your yarn and cut it)
Finally hide all the left yarns through the work (weave, cut them or use any other method you like)
Border 2
***Note: I’ll do this border white but you can do it in any other color you like
Start with a slip knot and leave it apart for a moment
Insert your hook in any stitch of the sc border
Grab the slip knot and slide it in
1 ch
Now repeat this pattern through all the sc border until you reach the end:
skip 1 stitch, 5 dc in the next stitch, skip 1 stitch, 1 slst in the next stitch
When you finish, slst in the 1st stitch you did the ch
Fasten off (ch 1, pull your yarn and cut it)
Finally hide all the left yarns through the work (weave, cut them or use any other method you like)
Border 3
***Note 1: I’ll do this border pink but you can do it in any other color you like.
***Note 2 : I’ll use a needle and pink yarn (as this yarn is a thin I'm using 2 strands together to make it thicker) , but you can use any yarn or ribbon you want.
- From the back pass through 1 stitch under the last border.
- Count 2 stitches and pass through 1 stitch to the back
- Again, from the back, count 2 stitches and pass through 1 stitch, then again count 2 stitches and pass through 1 stitch to the back
- Repeat that pattern until you reach the end: from the back pass through 1 stitch, count 2 stitches, pass through 1 stitch to the back, count 2 stitches and repeat...
When you are done, fasten off (cut the yarn and tie a knot at the back)
Finally hide all the left yarns through the work (weave, cut them or use any other method you like)
Bow
The bow you can make it with a piece of thick yarn, a ribbon, or you can crochet it.
Crocheted bow:
***Note: I used the thin pink yarn I used before and a 3.5 mm hook
Start with a slip knot
Now make chains until it’s long enough to tie a bow.
When you are done, fasten off (1 ch, pull and cut your yarn)
Finally hide the left yarns through the chains or just cut them
Add the bow to the cover:
- First way to do it would be to first tie the bow, then put glue in the back of the bow and paste it in the center in the front of the book cover
- The second way would be to pass your hook through a stitch of the center of the front of the bookcover, grab your bow with the hook and then tie it. And if you want, put a little bit of glue in the back of the bow to secure it to the cover.
