Materials

  • acrylic or sport yarn (5 ply) in 2 colors you like
  • 3 mm hook
  • scissors
  • sewing needle (optional)

***Note: you can use any yarn or hook size you want, the only difference will be the size of your bookmark.

Abbreviations

  • Magic ring - MR
  • Chain - ch
  • Single crochet - sc
  • Double crochet - dc
  • Slip stitch - slpst

Center of the flowers

start with slip knot

ch 2, skip the 1st ch and in the 2nd ch make 6 sc

When you finish, 1 slst in the 1st sc

Then ch 8

skip the 1st ch and in the 2nd ch make 6 sc

1 slst in the 1st sc

Repeat the pattern until you reach the length you want (the length of your book)

(8 ch, skip the 1st ch and in the 2nd ch make 6 sc, 1 slst in the 1st sc)

When you are done, finish off:

ch 1, pull your yarn, cut it and leave a tail

Petals of the flowers (part 1)

Identify the sc stitch in which you did the slst and insert your hook there.

Grab your yarn with which you’ll make the petals and make a loop, then pull it with your hook through the stitch.

3 ch

Note: these 3 ch will represent 1 dc, (we can’t directly make a dc because we are starting the work)

2 ch and then slst in the next stitch

2 ch

2 dc in the same stitch

2 ch and then slst in next stitch

2 ch

2 dc in the same stitch

2 ch and then slst in next stitch

2 ch

1 dc in the same stitch

And with this we did 1 half of a flower.

Now repeat the same pattern in all the centers left (start from the stitch where you did the slst):

1 dc, 2 ch, slst in next stitch, (2 ch, 2 dc in the same stitch, 2 ch, then slst in the next stitch)x2, 2 ch, 1 dc

When you finish it should look like this. We finished the first half of the flowers. Now we will make the other half to complete them.

Petals of the flowers (part 2)

To make the other half it’s very similar to what we did before.

1 dc in the same stitch where you did the last 2 ch and 1 dc (of the 1st half of the flower)

2 ch and slst in the next stitch

2 ch

2 dc in the same stitch

2 ch and slst in the next stitch

2 ch

2 dc in the same stitch

2 ch

Slst in the stitch where you did the first 1 dc and 2 ch (of the 1st half of the flower)

2 ch

1 dc in the same stitch

To close the flower:

slst in the top of the next dc (in the stitch of the top)

insert your hook in that stitch BUT just pass through the back loop (just 1 loop in your hook).

pass under the chains of the centers and slst

And we have completed 1 flower :)

Now repeat the same pattern in all the half flowers left (start from the stitch where you did the last 2 ch and 1 dc):

1 dc, 2 ch, slst in next stitch,

(2 ch, 2 dc in the same stitch, 2 ch, slst in next stitch),

(2 ch, 2 dc in the same stitch, 2 ch, slst in the next stitch with the 1 dc and 2 ch),

2 ch, 1 dc, slst in the top of the next dc (pass under the chains of the centers)

When you are almost done, in the last flower, do not make the last slst, stop at the last dc.

To complete the last flower, notice we returned to the first 3 ch we did (that represented the 1st dc of the work), so:

slst in the 3rd ch

finish off: ch 1, pull your yarn, cut leaving a tail

Finally, hide all the left yarns (weave at the back or use any other method you like ^^)
